This was a brand new unit right out of shrink wrap and with the most recent version of firmware.Resetting back to factory default via the web utility, and re-configurating the router, allowed the correct generation of the OpenVPN client/configuration file.

This Linksys sounds more powerful than the Netgear R7000, but I've read at least one person has had issues with DD-WRT on it. Also, it seems that these routers are a bit old now. It seems the Netgear R7000 was introduced in 2013 (so technology-wise, it's not much newer than my Asus RT-N66U), and the Linksys WRT3200ACM was introduced in 2016 (already 4 years ago).
